Results of Physical Examination on Labourers in Korea

Abstract
Owing to the progress in industry, industrial accidents have become one of the major social problems. Recent utilization of mechanical power in industry has contributed to marked promotion of industrial productivity in many respects, and has made a great contribution to modern living. But, on the other hand, it is true that frequency and severity of industrial accidents have increased.
According to statistics in 1963, analyzed by the Bureau of Labor in Korea, about 16, 000 workers were injured, and the expenses ofnpensation for them amounted to 100 million won. Besides, indirect losses, such as loss of labor force incidental to accidents, etc., are estimated to be enormous.
Cause of industrial accidents can be classified into two major categories: one caused by inproper environmental working condition and the other associated with human error.
Poor economic conditions and lack of both employers¢¥ and employees¢¥ interests safety, have interfered with improving industry as well as achieving progress in health and safety management.
This report summarized the prevailing rates of physical impairment due to industrial accidents in 1963, which were based on a survey carried out, by members of the Catholic Institute of Industrial Medicine, on 34, 362 workers in 306 industrial work shops.
1. The prevailing rate of physical impairments due to accidents among workers is 2. 20%. They consist of hurns(42.3%), amputations(29.0%), minor injuries(19. 2%), functional disabilities of joints (8.6%), deafness(0.5%) and loss of vision(0.3%). The existing rates in various industries-are as follows: 13.2% in glass-ware factories, 6.05 % in mechanical industry, 5.37% in metal industry, 3.25% in wood manufacturing industry and 3.02% in chemical industry.
2. Digital amputations account for 98.6%Q of all industrial amputations. Functional impairments are also mainly caused by this disability(87.1%) and burns and minor hand injuries are responsible for 67.0% and 86.7% respectively.
3. The accident rates of physical impairments due to industrial accidents in small-scale plants are higher than those in larger plants.
4. The accident rate has an tendency to decrease as the age of workers.
5. The accident rate has a tendency to decrease as the working duration
6. Woskersswith poor vision have a higher accident rate than normal workers.
